Monsters Inc Confirmed for Kingdom Hearts 3

Even in Japanese, Kingdom Hearts 3 has me hyped

New information about Kingdom Hearts 3 has arrived, this time from D23 Expo Japan 2018. Square Enix has released a new trailer, showing off both cinematics and gameplay alike for the highly anticipated title. While (understandably) only in Japanese, the biggest information to be parsed from this is the addition of a new world to explore, Monsters Inc.

Sora and gang will have to travel to the backward world of Monstropolis, where monsters are mundane, and children a threat. Here we see Sora take on a monstrous form as he fights alongside Mike Wazowski and Sully. The video’s description calls this place the “Monsters in one” world. Aside from this, we see Toy Story and Rapunzel based gameplay as well.

We also see a fair bit of combat. While cutscenes are cool, and the game is known for its heavy, heavy, heavy lore, it’s reassuring to see that the gameplay will be as exciting as it is visually stunning. Newcomers may even find it overwhelming with how much is going on. Personally, I enjoyed seeing how well the lip sync was for the characters and their Japanese dialogue.

This trailer also confirms the legitimacy of a rumored leak that happened a few months back. This leak, consisting of a number of screenshots, showed evidence of a Monsters Inc world, as well as the combat UI. While admittedly high quality, the leak couldn’t be confirmed at the time. I did notice that the color of Sora’s fur in monster form has changed, however. Though now that it’s public, I suppose that’s moot.

Kingdom Hearts 3 utilizes the Unreal Engine. It will release in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
